Mise-en-Scene

Costume & Makeup

The first outfit I have chosen for the subject to wear is a black bodysuit with an overlay dress on top, also in black. I have chosen to dress her in black to suit the dark depressing lyrics of the song, as mentioned by the participants of my questionnaire. It will also be interesting to see how with the use of this outfit, the subject contrasts the environment around her. I will present her in this outfit during scenes on the beach, because then when she submerges herself in the sea the saltwater won't damage the clothing material.
The second outfit I have chosen for the subject to wear is a flowery silk dress. She will wear this when performing in my secondary location to add variety to the visuals and keep the audience engaged in the music video. I was originally going to use this dress as the costume choice for the beach shoots, however the silk could have easily been damaged by the saltwater so an alternative has been chosen instead.
For the makeup, I decided on casual eye makeup to stop too much attention being drawn to them, as I wanted the audience to focus on the subjects' lips. Using a dark but vibrant lipstick coincides with the codes and conventions of the alternative genre, and will allow for them to stand out in close up shots, but won't be overly noticeable when filming other shot types. Also, it will allow for interesting visuals for the scenes containing extreme close ups of the subject lip syncing.

Diegetic Sound

I am hoping to use a polaroid photograph of the subject with an ex-partner to signify the fact that she is feeling suicidal due to the breakdown of a relationship. This will be used in the first shot of my production, floating on top of the sea. I will then revisit this prop at the end of the music video washed up on the shoreline, to remind the audience of the reason behind the subjects’ actions.
Diegetic sound will be used to add realism and atmosphere into the setting. Possible sounds that would be heard on a beach and the surrounding area include waves/flowing water, wildlife, and traffic.
