Genre & Representation

My music video pitch is a performance/narrative based hybrid of an alternative indie pop track.

Representation of the Artist

The artist is represented as a teenage girl that is suffering with depression. The choice of black costumes with purple lipstick accompanies the use of dramatic movements during the performance aspects of the video. I chose to represent the artist in this way because when in the bright setting, it shows that her depression is all inside her and does not impact the outside world.

Representation of the Gothic Subculture

I have represented gothic people as always wearing black clothing and exaggerating situations. I have also portrayed them as being self-loathing and full of hatred towards themselves by using the artist as a stereotype for all people that identify themselves as gothic.

Representation of Women & Sexuality

I have represented women as being dependent on their partners. This is portrayed by beginning the music video showing a photograph with an ex-partner during happier times. Teenage girls specifically are often stereotyped as being dependent on having a relationship to be happy, so I used this stereotype as the foundation for the plot of my production. The lyrics of the song also suggest that the artist is in a relationship with another woman, meaning that in this video she is representing the LGBT community.

Representation of Depression

I used dark clothing and a song with powerful lyrics to symbolise depression and suicidal tendencies. However, I have decided to set my music video in Spain to contradict the dark depressive setting that the lyrics suggest. Using vast beaches and Spanish mountain ranges as the backdrop allows me to portray the artist as being ‘trapped’ in her suicidal state of mind, as everything she wears is dark yet everything around her is vibrant and full of colour. It also suggests that 'Muddy Waters ' follow her wherever she goes, and cannot escape from her suicidal thoughts.
